The historic Anza Trail allows visitors to explore the history of Tucson, including the Spanish history of the southwest. Juan Bautista de Anza II, a Spanish commander, led a party of over 200 colonists on an expedition along this trail, which spans more than 1,200 miles. You can start your tour at several sites near Tucson, depending on what you want to see. The oldest European settlement in the state, Tubac, once served as the site of a Spanish presidio. Today, it’s a thriving arts community filled with restaurants and galleries featuring the work of local artists.

The missions and churches in and around Tucson also play a significant role in the area’s history. Covenant Presbyterian Church dates back more than a century, while St. John’s Episcopal Church showcases a gorgeous Tiffany stained-glass window. DeGrazia Mission in the Sun is a place that’s worth visiting if you’re interested in the art of Ted DeGrazia, a world-famous painter who hailed from Tucson. He built the eclectic chapel and his murals still grace the walls.
